Locations
Locations groups the location types that make up your warehouse map in Putaway WMS. Each type has a distinct operational meaning: receiving and quarantine flows are not interchangeable with long-term storage, and returns areas keep reverse logistics separate from forward picking when you configure them that way.
Use the pages below to understand when staff should move stock into each category of location and how that choice affects downstream picking, restrictions, and reporting.
Location categories
Section titled “Location categories”- Receiving locations — Staging for inbound goods before putaway or inspection is complete.
- Storage locations — Primary holding bins, shelves, or zones where sellable stock resides for allocation to orders.
- Quarantine locations — Holding for material that must not be allocated until quality or administrative release.
- Returns locations — Intake positions for returned goods pending sorting, inspection, or disposition.
Detailed maintenance and any migration of stock between types belong in the linked topics and in your warehouse procedures.
